Children and Chiropractic |
Catching a problem
early means it can be corrected much faster. Often, spinal
problems begin in childhood and develop gradually.
Chiropractic approaches health care from a preventive point
of view. Beginning with birth, a child’s spine has daily
stress. Birth itself is a traumatic experience. A baby's
neck must bend and rotate several different directions to
get through the birth canal. This may cause subluxations or
misalignment which can be corrected even at one day old.
Other problems may
arise as children grow. The spine can curve in a variety of
ways. Watch carefully for spina bifida and scoliosis. Spina
bifida may cause a sideways curvature of the spine
(scoliosis). If it is not found early, it may cause serious
disfiguring accompanied with a lot of pain. Scoliosis can
develop particularly rapidly during the growth years from 12
to 16. Children can have a much higher incidence of back
pain than was previously thought. Studies have shown 12 to
15 year old kids with 30.4% reporting a history of low back
pain. 22.8% of elementary school children and 33.3% of
secondary school kids have reported consistent low back
pain.
Take your children’s
complaints seriously!
They are not
necessarily “just growing pains.” There may well be some
real, correctable cause. Your children use their spine every
time they run, stand, sit, craw, play and move. It’s a good
idea to have their spinal alignment checked at least as
often as their teeth which are only used to eat. Our spines
are one of the most important structures of our bodies.
